Enterra™ Therapy Success

A new type of treatment is available now for Gastroparesis.  Certain hospitals are now implanting Enterra™ Therapy, or Gastric Electrical Stimulators (GES), which are manufactured by Medtronic.  Since the stomach is a muscle like the heart, doctors have been working on creating a device that will stimulate the nerves in stomach for people with gastroparesis. It may improve the symptoms of nausea and vomiting by stimulating certain nerves within the stomach.  It may also improve gastric dysrhythmias (as seen on the EGG) which can improve nausea as well.  Doctors in research hospitals are implanting these devices more frequently now. It can be placed laproscopically or through an open procedure depending on the individual patient. It is not a cure for GP, but instead a treatment that helps some people eat better with decreased and/or no nausea and vomiting.
