Gastric Stimulation
A study conducted between 1998 and 2002 at the University of Kansas Medical Center showed great promise as an emerging therapy in alleviating symptoms of gelayed gastric emptying in diabetics. The study, involving 48 insulin-dependent diabetics showed a decrease in symptoms and improved nutrition, which in turn allowed for more effective control of blood sugar levels. Drawbacks include a lack of physicians able to perform the implantation, and the amount of time it takes to achieve results. Overall, however, this therapy offers hope for better management of DGP in the future.
Botox:
A study published by DiabetesCare in 2004 set out to determine whether injection of the pylorus with botulinum toxin in patients with diabetic gastroparesis improved their symptoms. They observed whether or not botox altered gastric emptying, and the effects it had on both their weight management and insulin use. The botox works to relax the pylorus to allow for food to empty more easily. Half of the patients involved did exhibit improve gastric emptying, and increased use of insulin. Six of the eight participants were also able to gain weight. However; a significant drawback to botox therapy is that the effects seem to be temporary.
